Welcome to the Newfoundland Dog Picture Page.
The Newfoundland dog breed gets its name because it comes from Newfoundland, where it was bred as a working dog. It is a large dog, usually black in color. They are known for being loyal and sweet in their dispositions; they have natural water rescue tendencies. The Newfoundland dogs have webbed feet and amazing swimming abilities. No wonder they excel in water sports.
The Newfoundland loves water; you can teach him all you want to by taking him near water. That is not to say that he does not like being on land. In fact, he is quite comfortable doing various kinds of jobs for his master. These dogs have been employed to pull heavy loads as well as save lives in water.
This dog adores children and is said to be the perfect nanny! The Newfoundland has a keen sixth sense. If he senses any danger, he will not wait for orders but run to protect his family.
You need to start training your Newfie as early as possible. Keep in mind that he is extremely sensitive. So, make a conscious effort not to lose patience or temper on him. Before training your Newfoundland, you must accept the fact that it is a relatively slow dog. So, do not expect him to run around as many other breeds do. In fact apart from swimming which he does as if they are made for each other, he tries to avoid other form of exercises and physical activities.
The Newfoundland is very fond of swimming and it is therefore its preferred way to exercise. You should therefore make efforts to make him do light exercises on a regular basis. This will not only make him fitter but will also improve his health.
Training your Newfoundland is not very different from training any other dog. Just make sure you take him to the water more often. Teach him the basics of sit, stay, down and come by giving clear one-word commands. However, you will have to be more patient and persistent while training your Newfoundland because they are fiercely independent streak. However, they are quite sensitive to your moods; so you need to be pleasant and patient with them especially during the training period. The Newfoundland dogs are sweet, calm and gentle, and make ideal family pets. These dogs love to play and swim, and adore company and attention. So, you can teach them with love and affection more effectively rather than be harsh on them.
