Mastiff Picture Page

Welcome to the Mastiff Picture Page.
The American Mastiff is a large, strong, and powerful dog. This breed is known to be protective but not aggressive. They love children and will even become aggressive if they sense any threat to the children. They are generally happy, quiet, calm, loyal and loving. Since these dogs are of the Mastiff type and grow to be very large, this breed needs an owner who knows how to display strong leadership.

While training your Mastiff puppy try to maintain a loving interaction with him; it will create a strong bond between you and him, which will make the rest of the training much easier.

It is a good idea to use playtime to teach the basic commands to your puppy. Just be careful not to expose him to large crowds and loud noises that will frighten him.

It is essential to leash train your puppy. You can begin by having your puppy wear a collar and gradually introduce the leash. Always make him walk on your left side. Very soon he will love it as it becomes a signal for going outdoors. Once he is used to the leash, you can introduce the ‘heel’ command. When your puppy starts walking ahead of you, just take a U-turn and say ‘heel’. He will run back to be by your side. Praise him and repeat it many times. Similarly, you can teach the other commands of sit, stay and come in the same manner.

You will need to housetrain your Mastiff from the day you bring him home. Start by taking your dog outside and find a spot where he can ease himself. Fix a time and then take him to that spot. Make sure he is on the leash. Give commands like ‘go potty’ or ‘hurry up.’ After he has finished his job, praise him and give a pat on his back. Then bring him home and feed him. Make sure he has enough water at all times. It is also very important that you keep to his routine. Feed him at regular hours and take him out according to the schedule you have established for him. Even well-trained dogs sometimes have accidents. If it happens, just clean the place properly. In future make sure you let him take his own sweet time to do his job and avoid making changes in his diet.

Spending more time outside helps you cure him of his boredom also. Your Mastiff can become a neighborhood annoyance with his incessant barking if he is bored. Long walks can take care of that.
