Start training your Cavalier King Charles from the day you bring him home. Treat him gently and be patient; and don’t expect miracles in the first few weeks. Just keep at it patiently. Make sure to correct him when he does anything wrong. If bad habits set in, it will be much harder to change them than to correct him there and then. That is particularly applicable when you crate train him. Make it clear that he can relieve himself only outdoors, and don’t let any accidents happen.

Be consistent and persistent in training your dog. Even if your dog has been poorly trained, you can teach new tricks to an old dog as well. All you have to do is to keep repeating what you want him to do. Make sure your commands are brief, preferably single word commands, and they are consistent. Often when dogs misbehave it is because they have got the wrong message from your ambiguous command. Never make a big deal of his misbehavior. Even that gives a wrong signal to him. It is best to ignore bad behavior and reward him for good behavior. It is a good idea to take advice from your pet’s vet and follow his recommendations. You may want to put him in an obedience class for some time. You will find many training and obedience schools in your neighborhood.
