The Beagle belongs to the Hound Family of dogs. It is a medium-sized dog with short legs and long soft ears. They are basically scent dogs and are trained primarily for finding animals like hare during hunting trips. Because of their ability to smell they are mostly use for detecting game.
People love to take them as pets because of their good health, size and pleasant temper. Beagles are much loved and have found mention in paintings, films, television and books.
Training your Beagle to stay in a crate is in the interest of their safety and your sanity. When you start crate training give him a toy to occupy his mind and remain within sight.
Don’t leave him in the crate for long; you may increase the duration gradually. Next, start the socialization process by introducing him to members of your family but don’t overwhelm him with too many visitors and give him enough time to get used to his environment.
Being a scent dog, it is not easy to train a Beagle because they generally like to follow their own instincts, especially if they have picked up a scent. They are single-minded and have a determined nature. But, you can train them if you know the knack. Here are some hints:
Start by giving one-word simple commands like sit, stay and come. These are essential commands to communicate with your dog. Teach him the home rules and good behavior even if you have no intention of taking him to a show. It is almost impossible to reverse bad habits if he picks them up as a puppy. Also, choose training activities that are appropriate to Beagles such as discovering things, running or retrieving exercises.
Remember positive reinforcement works much better than punishment. The mantra for training your Beagle is praise, praise and praise. He thrives on it. But, give him rewards after he has obeyed your command. Never show the reward before hand; that amounts to bribe, and gives a wrong signal to him – he will follow your command only if there is a reward. If you want an obedient and well-trained Beagle, never punish him physically. Just ignore him when you want to show your disapproval. And make sure the punishment is given immediately; there is no point ignoring him in the evening for what he has done in the morning.
